When can I wash my hair after cataract surgery

You’ve just had cataract surgery. Your vision is improving. But everyday questions start to pop up. One of the most common?
“When can I wash my hair?”

It’s a good question—because getting water, soap, or shampoo in your eye too soon could increase the risk of infection or irritation. However by using the most advanced techniques this is not a problem when the surgery is performed by Prof Ursell. Let’s break it down so you know exactly what’s safe and when.

Why be careful after cataract surgery?

In the first few days after surgery, your eye is healing. There’s a tiny wound where the lens was replaced. It needs time to seal fully.

During this period, your eye is potentially more vulnerable. Getting water or shampoo in the eye could introduce bacteria or cause inflammation. That’s why some basic precautions are essential. However, Prof Ursell's techniques minimise this risk.

When can I wash my hair?

You can wash your hair from the day after surgery—as long as you're careful. Here’s how to do it safely:

  • Tilt your head back. Think salon-style, not shower-style. Let the water run from the top of your head backwards, away from your eyes.
  • Avoid rubbing your eye. Even with a towel or flannel. Pat gently around the eye instead.
  • Close your eyes gently. Don’t squeeze them tight, but keep them shut while rinsing your hair.
  • Use a mild shampoo. This reduces the risk of irritation.

If you’re nervous about doing it yourself, ask someone to help the first time.

When can I shower normally?

You can shower the next day too, and you can direct water on your face.

When can I wash my face?

You can wash your face gently the next day. Use a soft cloth to dab around the area..

What should I avoid?

  • No hot tubs for at least 2 weeks. These are high-risk for bacteria
  • Makeup around the eye is allowed

What happens if water accidentally gets in?

Don’t panic. If a small amount of clean water gets into your eye, just blink it out. Use your prescribed drops as directed. If you notice redness, pain, or discharge, contact your doctor for advice.

How long do I need to be careful?

Most surgeons recommend taking special care for the first 7 to 10 days after surgery but with Prof Ursell’s techniques you can resume normal activities immediately. After surgery the eye is usually well on the way to healing, and you can resume normal routines—including hair washing—without extra precautions.

Final tips for hair care after cataract surgery

  • Avoid salon treatments like hair dye or perms for 1–2 weeks, as the fumes or chemicals could irritate your eye.

Dry your hair gently to avoid knocking or tugging near your face.

Highly professional, extremely efficient, and an excellent communicator, Paul exudes experience, knowledge, and ability. The whole process — initial consultation, operation, and post-op check-up — was wonderfully stress-free. I now have 20/20 vision, am glasses-free, and I am delighted by the results.

The cataract surgery has completely changed my life. Mr. Ursell put me at ease and explained all options. The procedure was quick and painless and completely successful, and I now have 20/20 vision in my good eye. One of the reasons I had the surgery was because of Mr. Ursell’s standing and experience. Cannot praise highly enough.

I was very short-sighted and my cataracts badly affected both reading and distance acuity. After the operation I now have very good distance vision (glasses-free) but still need glasses for reading. (This was the expected outcome as I did not want multi-focus implants). The operation was quick and painless, and I had no post-operative discomfort at all (which surprised me). The results are remarkable.

I can certainly recommend Professor Ursell. He is a personable consultant and a skilled surgeon.”

Both before and after the surgery, Dr. Ursell and staff gave me the information and attention I needed. It was a great success, and I highly recommend Dr. Ursell.”
