Lens replacement surgery, also called Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE), might be a good option if you want to see clearly without needing glasses, like when you were younger.

Here are some reasons why lens replacement might be a good choice for you:

  1. You want to see better without glasses, but laser eye surgery isn’t right for you.
  2. Your eye prescription is too strong for laser eye surgery.
  3. Your vision is changing because you are getting older.
  4. Your eyes are healthy, and you do not have serious problems like glaucoma (a condition that can damage the eye’s nerve).
  5. You want to avoid needing cataract surgery later in life.

This surgery replaces your eye’s natural lens with a new one that helps you see clearly. It is important to talk with an eye doctor to find out if lens replacement is right for you.

Lens replacement surgery can help you see more clearly. During this surgery, we remove your eye’s natural lens and replace it with a new, man-made lens. This new lens allows you to see sharply, making it easier to read or see things far away without needing glasses or bifocals.

This surgery is similar to cataract surgery, where we remove a cloudy lens. However, in lens replacement surgery, we use a special lens that helps you see clearly at all distances. This means you might not need glasses or contact lenses anymore.

  • Multifocal IOLs are a type of prosthetic lens used in cataract surgery. Some patients choose to have this lens placed before they have developed cataracts, a procedure known as a refractive lens exchange.
  • During cataract or lens replacement surgery, the patient’s natural lenses are replaced with multifocal IOLs. These new lenses improve near, intermediate, and far-distance vision.
  • Etched onto the surface of the multifocal lens are concentric rings, which allow images at a variety of distances to focus on the retina. Ultimately, multifocal IOLs provide restored visual function and reduce or eliminate the need to wear glasses.
  • Reduced lifetime cost of glasses and contacts: Multifocal IOLs can decrease your need for reading glasses or computer glasses after cataract surgery. These implanted lenses expand your range of vision, so you can see clearly at near and far without additional eyewear. Many patients who choose multifocal IOLs find they can be glasses-free or may only need reading glasses occasionally for reading small print following surgery.
  • More freedom to live actively and unencumbered: Multifocal IOLs improve near, intermediate, and far-distance vision, varying with the lens model chosen. In many cases, after having the lenses implanted, people no longer need to wear corrective lenses to see clearly.
  • No upkeep or routine replacement necessary: The results of multifocal IOLs are long-lasting. Unlike contacts, multifocal IOLs are implanted inside the eye and don’t require any additional care or routine replacement.

Lens replacement surgery is more complex and carries more risks than other eye correction methods. But, if you have a severe vision problem and want to rely less on glasses or contact lenses, this surgery could be worth considering.

Here are some risks and possible complications of lens replacement:

  • The retina (a layer at the back of your eye that senses light) might detach, especially if you are very nearsighted.
  • The new lens could shift out of place.
  • You might experience an increase in eye pressure.
  • There is a chance of infection or bleeding inside the eye.
  • Your eyelid might droop after surgery.
  • If you get a special type of lens called multifocal IOLs (intraocular lenses), you might notice glare, halos, or blurry vision.

Lens replacement surgery is quick, taking about 15 minutes per eye. We treat one eye at a time, usually with a week between each procedure.

Here’s how the surgery works:

  1. Making the incision: We start by making a small cut where the white of your eye meets the clear front part (the cornea).
  2. Opening the lens capsule: We create a small circular opening in the thin, bag-like cover around the lens (called the lens capsule).
  3. Removing the old lens: We gently break your natural lens into tiny pieces and remove them. This is called lens extraction.
  4. Placing the new lens: Finally, we insert a new lens into the same capsule where your old lens was. We choose this new lens based on what will help improve your vision the most.

After lens replacement surgery, you will notice clearer vision. This procedure reduces the blurriness when you look at things.

You may no longer need reading glasses or bifocals, which can be a big relief. You’ll be able to enjoy activities like reading, sewing, or using your phone without always needing your glasses.

Going out to see friends, watching a movie, or just taking a walk becomes easier and more enjoyable. You won’t have to worry about forgetting your glasses at home.

In simple terms, this surgery helps you get back to doing the things you love with clearer vision. It can feel like turning back time to when you could see well without any problems.

Refractive lens exchange (RLE) is an advanced vision correction procedure replacing the eye’s natural lens with an artificial one. Ideal for those with presbyopia or high refractive errors, it offers a solution when LASIK or PRK isn’t suitable. RLE can reduce reliance on glasses and prevent cataracts. Click here for more information.
This seminal paper suggests that RLE can improve vision across all distances using multifocal or accommodative IOLs. It is particularly beneficial for those with high farsightedness or early cataract formation, as it eliminates the need for glasses while preventing cataract progression.
