How long does cataract surgery last?

Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed and successful procedures in modern medicine. But if you’ve been told you need the surgery—or you’re thinking about it—you might be wondering: How long does cataract surgery actually last?

The answer can refer to a few things: the duration of the procedure itself, the recovery time, and how long the results of the surgery last. Let’s take a closer look at each.

How long does the procedure take?

Cataract surgery is quick. In most cases, the surgery takes under 10 minutes per eye.

That said, your total time at the clinic will be longer, typically 2 to 3 hours. This includes:

  • Pre-operative checks and preparation
  • Pupil dilation
  • The actual procedure
  • Post-operative monitoring before you’re discharged

If you’re having both eyes done, they’re usually operated on a few weeks apart—to ensure the first eye heals well.

How long is recovery after cataract surgery?

The good news is that most people notice clearer vision within 24 to 48 hours.

Here’s a general timeline:

  • First 24 hours: Mild blurriness or light sensitivity is normal
  • 1 week: Vision usually stabilises significantly
  • 4 to 6 weeks: Full healing, with final visual results

During this time, you’ll use eye drops to prevent infection and inflammation. You’ll also have follow-up visits with Professor Ursell to check healing.

How long do the results of cataract surgery last?

One of the best things about cataract surgery is that the results are long-lasting.

The cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial intraocular lens (IOL). This lens is designed to last a lifetime and does not wear out.

However, there is one common condition to be aware of: posterior capsule opacification (PCO). Sometimes called a “secondary cataract,” this occurs months or years after surgery when the membrane behind the lens becomes cloudy.

PCO is easily treated with a quick, painless laser procedure (YAG laser capsulotomy) that restores clear vision in minutes.

What affects how long results last?

While the artificial lens itself is permanent, your overall eye health can affect long-term vision. Conditions such as:

  • Macular degeneration
  • Glaucoma
  • Diabetes-related eye disease

...may affect your sight over time. That’s why ongoing eye check-ups remain important after surgery.

The cataract surgery on both of my eyes went very smoothly without any problems. There was no pain afterwards and I didn’t have to wear any eyepatch. I would highly recommend Professor Ursell for cataract surgery.

Highly professional, extremely efficient, and an excellent communicator, Paul exudes experience, knowledge, and ability. The whole process — initial consultation, operation, and post-op check-up — was wonderfully stress-free. I now have 20/20 vision, am glasses-free, and I am delighted by the results.

The cataract surgery has completely changed my life. Mr. Ursell put me at ease and explained all options. The procedure was quick and painless and completely successful, and I now have 20/20 vision in my good eye. One of the reasons I had the surgery was because of Mr. Ursell’s standing and experience. Cannot praise highly enough.

I was very short-sighted and my cataracts badly affected both reading and distance acuity. After the operation I now have very good distance vision (glasses-free) but still need glasses for reading. (This was the expected outcome as I did not want multi-focus implants). The operation was quick and painless, and I had no post-operative discomfort at all (which surprised me). The results are remarkable.

I can certainly recommend Professor Ursell. He is a personable consultant and a skilled surgeon.”

“Dr. Paul Ursell squashed many of my concerns for not having cataract surgery. He offered comfort with examples of his long/distinguished career and new technology that he applies to the surgery.

Both before and after the surgery, Dr. Ursell and staff gave me the information and attention I needed. It was a great success, and I highly recommend Dr. Ursell.”
