How long after cataract surgery can you see?

Cataract surgery is one of the most common and successful procedures worldwide. If you’re about to have it done, you may be wondering: How long after cataract surgery can I see clearly?

The good news is that most patients notice improved vision within 24–48 hours after surgery. However, full recovery and stabilisation of vision can take a few weeks. Let’s break down what to expect after cataract surgery and how long it takes for vision to return to normal.

What to expect right after cataract surgery

Cataract surgery is quick and painless, usually taking about 10–15 minutes.

Professor Ursell’s average time has been measured in many thousands of cases to be below 10 minutes. After the procedure, your eye may feel:

  • Slightly blurry – Your vision might be foggy or hazy due to swelling
  • Light-sensitive – You may experience glare or halos around lights
  • Watery or itchy – Mild discomfort is normal, but avoid rubbing your eye.

Most patients go home within an hour or two of surgery.

With Professor Ursell’s modern techniques the eye is ultra strong immediately after the operation so you don't need to wear a protective eye shield overnight.

When will my vision improve?

First 24–48 Hours: Many people experience dramatic improvement in vision within the first day, especially if their cataract was severe or you had to wear strong glasses before surgery. However, it’s common for vision to remain slightly blurry as the eye heals.

First Week: By the end of the first week, your vision should be significantly clearer. Colours will appear brighter and objects sharper than before surgery.

4–6 Weeks: It takes about a month or two for the eye to fully heal and for vision to completely stabilise. Some patients may need a new glasses prescription after this period.

Factors that affect vision recovery

Recovery speed varies from person to person. Some factors that may affect how quickly you see clearly include:

    • The severity of your cataract – If your cataract was very advanced, your brain may take longer to adjust to the new lens.
  • The type of intraocular lens (IOL) implanted
  • Other eye conditions – Conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, or diabetic eye disease can affect the outcome.
  • Following post-op instructions – Using prescribed eye drops and avoiding strenuous activities can speed up healing.

How to speed up vision recovery

To heal faster and see clearly sooner, follow these tips:

  • Use prescribed eye drops – They reduce inflammation and prevent infection.
  • Avoid rubbing your eye – Even if it feels itchy, touching your eye can slow healing.
  • Wear protective eyewear – Sunglasses reduce glare and protect against bright light.
  • Avoid heavy lifting or bending over – This prevents pressure buildup in the eye.
  • Attend follow-up appointments – Your doctor will monitor your progress and adjust treatment if needed.

What if my vision is still blurry?

It’s normal to have some mild blurriness, glare, or halos around lights in the first few days or weeks. If these symptoms persist beyond a month, consult your doctor.

Highly professional, extremely efficient, and an excellent communicator, Paul exudes experience, knowledge, and ability. The whole process — initial consultation, operation, and post-op check-up — was wonderfully stress-free. I now have 20/20 vision, am glasses-free, and I am delighted by the results.

The cataract surgery has completely changed my life. Mr. Ursell put me at ease and explained all options. The procedure was quick and painless and completely successful, and I now have 20/20 vision in my good eye. One of the reasons I had the surgery was because of Mr. Ursell’s standing and experience. Cannot praise highly enough.

I was very short-sighted and my cataracts badly affected both reading and distance acuity. After the operation I now have very good distance vision (glasses-free) but still need glasses for reading. (This was the expected outcome as I did not want multi-focus implants). The operation was quick and painless, and I had no post-operative discomfort at all (which surprised me). The results are remarkable.

I can certainly recommend Professor Ursell. He is a personable consultant and a skilled surgeon.”

Both before and after the surgery, Dr. Ursell and staff gave me the information and attention I needed. It was a great success, and I highly recommend Dr. Ursell.”
