Can You Rub Your Eyes After Cataract Surgery?

Cataract surgery is a quick and effective procedure that restores clear vision by replacing the eye’s clouded lens. As your eye heals, you may wonder whether it's safe to rub your eyes after surgery. While occasional irritation is normal, excessive rubbing can lead to complications.

In this blog, we’ll explore why rubbing your eyes is perfectly safe after modern cataract surgery performed by Prof Ursell.

Why Do People Feel the Urge to Rub Their Eyes?

Eye irritation after cataract surgery is common and can be caused by:

  • Dry Eyes: A temporary side effect of surgery that may last for several months.
  • Residual Healing: Your eye is still adjusting, which can lead to mild discomfort.
  • Allergies or Irritants: Dust, pollen, or air pollution can make your eyes feel itchy.

Is It Safe to Rub Your Eyes After Surgery?

While your eyes will be mostly healed after cataract surgery, rubbing them is still not recommended but is perfectly safe. Here’s why:

  • Risk of Infection: Your eye remains sensitive for an extended period. Rubbing can introduce bacteria, increasing the risk of infection. However with the modern techniques developed by Prof Ursell this risk is negligible
  • Potential for Lens Displacement: If you had a premium intraocular lens (IOL) implanted, aggressive rubbing could cause movement or misalignment. It is advisable not to rub your eyes in this situation in the first 24 hours after surgery. After this it is safe to do so.
  • Delayed Healing: Even months after surgery, your eye’s surface may still be delicate. Constant rubbing can cause irritation and prolong recovery. For this reason whilst it's perfectly safe we advise against it.

What to Do Instead of Rubbing Your Eyes?

If you experience discomfort, try these alternatives:

  • Use Lubricating Drops: Artificial tears can relieve dryness and irritation.
  • Apply a Cool Compress: A cold, damp cloth over your eyes can soothe itching.
  • Blink Frequently: This helps distribute moisture across the eye’s surface.
  • Consult Professor Paul Ursell: If persistent irritation continues, schedule an appointment to check for underlying issues.

Long-Term Eye Care After Cataract Surgery

Months after surgery, maintaining good eye health is essential. Here are some key tips:

  • Protect Your Eyes from UV Rays: Always wear sunglasses when outdoors.
  • Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration keeps your eyes comfortable.
  • Regular Eye Check-Ups: Routine visits ensure the long-term success of your cataract surgery.

While occasional eye rubbing is harmless, it’s best to avoid the habit even months after cataract surgery. If you're experiencing persistent irritation, contact Professor Paul Ursell for expert guidance.

Highly professional, extremely efficient, and an excellent communicator, Paul exudes experience, knowledge, and ability. The whole process — initial consultation, operation, and post-op check-up — was wonderfully stress-free. I now have 20/20 vision, am glasses-free, and I am delighted by the results.

The cataract surgery has completely changed my life. Mr. Ursell put me at ease and explained all options. The procedure was quick and painless and completely successful, and I now have 20/20 vision in my good eye. One of the reasons I had the surgery was because of Mr. Ursell’s standing and experience. Cannot praise highly enough.

I was very short-sighted and my cataracts badly affected both reading and distance acuity. After the operation I now have very good distance vision (glasses-free) but still need glasses for reading. (This was the expected outcome as I did not want multi-focus implants). The operation was quick and painless, and I had no post-operative discomfort at all (which surprised me). The results are remarkable.

I can certainly recommend Professor Ursell. He is a personable consultant and a skilled surgeon.”

Both before and after the surgery, Dr. Ursell and staff gave me the information and attention I needed. It was a great success, and I highly recommend Dr. Ursell.”
