How Cataract Surgery Works at Parkside Hospital

Cataract surgery at Parkside is carried out as a day case using phacoemulsification.

A small, self-sealing incision at the edge of the cornea, through which the cloudy natural lens is gently broken up and removed, and a folded artificial lens (IOL) is inserted and unfolded into place.

On the day:

  • Eye drops dilate and numb the eye; no injections, no general anaesthetic for the vast majority of patients
  • You’re awake and comfortable throughout; the procedure itself typically takes under 15–20 minutes per eye
  • No stitches, no eye patch, thanks to Professor Ursell’s no-needle, no-patch technique
  • You go home the same day, usually within an hour or two of the procedure

What to expect afterwards:

Most patients notice a visible improvement in vision within 24–48 hours.

You’ll need someone to drive you home on the day, but many patients resume normal activities, including washing their hair and light bending, the very next day.

A follow-up appointment is scheduled for one to two weeks after surgery, with full aftercare included for four weeks.
