What are the most common problems after cataract surgery?
Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most successful procedures performed worldwide. However, like any medical procedure, there can be minor issues during recovery. If you’ve recently had cataract surgery or are considering it, here’s a guide to the most common problems patients experience—and how to manage them.
1. Blurred Vision
Blurred vision is common immediately after cataract surgery. Your eye needs time to heal and adjust to the new lens. Most patients notice an improvement within a few days, but for some, it may take a few weeks.
What to Do: Follow your Professor Ursell’s instructions and use prescribed eye drops. If blurred vision persists, contact your eye specialist.
2. Dry Eyes
Cataract surgery can temporarily disrupt the tear film, causing dry, scratchy eyes.
What to Do: Use lubricating eye drops as recommended and avoid dry, dusty environments when possible.
3. Light Sensitivity
Increased sensitivity to light is normal as your eye heals.
What to Do: Wear sunglasses outdoors and avoid bright lights during the initial recovery period.
4. Floaters
Floaters are tiny specks or cobweb-like shapes that drift across your vision. They are often harmless but can be alarming.
What to Do: Monitor floaters and report any sudden increase, especially if accompanied by flashes of light, as this may indicate a more serious issue.
5. Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO)
PCO, also known as a secondary cataract, can cause cloudy vision months or even years after surgery.
What to Do: A quick, painless laser treatment called YAG capsulotomy can restore clear vision.
When to Seek Help
While most side effects are mild and temporary, seek immediate medical attention if you experience:
- Severe pain
- Sudden loss of vision

“The cataract surgery has completely changed my life. Mr. Ursell put me at ease and explained all options. The procedure was quick and painless and completely successful, and I now have 20/20 vision in my good eye. One of the reasons I had the surgery was because of Mr. Ursell’s standing and experience. Cannot praise highly enough.”

“I was very short-sighted and my cataracts badly affected both reading and distance acuity. After the operation I now have very good distance vision (glasses-free) but still need glasses for reading. (This was the expected outcome as I did not want multi-focus implants). The operation was quick and painless, and I had no post-operative discomfort at all (which surprised me). The results are remarkable.
I can certainly recommend Professor Ursell. He is a personable consultant and a skilled surgeon.”
